258 Riverside Drive is a Beaux Arts structure designed by McKim, Meade and White. Like many buildings on the Upper West Side, it fell onto hard times in the 1970’s. The original iron and glass vestibule was removed and a glass block vestibule installed; the sconces were replaced with bare fluorescent bulbs; the marble floors were dull and cracked. Following its conversion to a Co-op, the Board committed themselves to a renovation in 1991. Defining the scope within a limited budget was the most challenging aspect of the project. Focusing on a clear vision of the project, to restore wherever possible and reinvent elements where necessary, we were able to reclaim the elegance and stateliness of the original structure.
